With friends like these: NG Magazine review The Enemy

Tonight at Nottingham Trent Students Union, we were in for a treat. The hotly-tipped four-piece The Enemy were due to play, but not before Sheffield outfit The Harrisons entertained us all with their own brand of punchy punk-pop that set the night alight. Their new single Dear Constable could certainly propel them to mainstream awareness, so keep an ear out for it.

When The Enemy finally make an appearance, they begin by blasting into debut single 40 Days and 40 Nights, which was rapturously received. However, the rest of the set was a limp affair and it had to be said that they were fighting a tough battle to retain the attention of the crowd, especially during Fear Killed The Youth. Thankfully, they were rescued by their recent top ten smash-hit Away From Here, during which even Tom Clarke seemed relieved at the sudden burst of enthusiasm he could see in the audience.

They followed this up with their debut album’s title track We’ll Live And Die In These Towns, which had a nice slow pace that provided a great contrast to the intensity of the rest of the set. Had Enough brought the venue back to life again with its spasmodic bassline, encouraging a sea of fans to yell along to the chorus. This has definite ‘future single’ hallmarks about it.

All in all, The Enemy are a half-decent live act, but if they’re already having trouble getting a good response from touting their debut album across blighty, how on Earth will they manage to produce a decent follow-up? There are concerns, and there’s no denying that they are dwarfed on the massive stage, but if the Arctics can handle the pressure heaped upon their young shoulders, there must be hope for The Enemy yet…
