Example: Live Review

No longer sporting his Dennis The Menace style barnet, Example played Nottingham club Stealth to a notably poor turn out. Numbers however, had no effect on the audience's energy, which was proved by the fact the front barrier was left buckled in two and I was soaked with beer. It’s hard to say what the highlights of the set were, as each track was as enthusiastically received as the other, but So Many Roads and the encore numbers Me and Mandy and You Can't Rap, had the audience jumping and singing with reckless abandon. His clever remix of the Rolling Stones Paint It Black was also a crowd rocker.
The audience was an eclectic mix of people wearing skinny jeans and fitted caps, proving Example's lyrics and samples have the ability to find a home in people who are not necessarily stereotypical hip-hop fans. His style of delivery changes somewhat when performing live though and becomes closer to the way Dizzee Rascal performs, in a grimey, beats and bars fashion. This is however, by no means a bad thing, and only serves to fuel the audience's appreciation of the music even more.
Despite his set barely lasting an hour, Example delivered his goods to a fantastic audience, no matter how few of them there might have been. Mike Skinner lost many potential superstars when his The Beats label went kaput last year, but Example still deserves to, and probably will, go a long, long way.
