Jamie T: Live Review, Nottingham Rescue Rooms, 14th June 2009

Usually when someone says Wimbledon you think of tennis, the Wombles and maybe Vinnie Jones. Well Jamie Treays or Jamie T as he is more commonly known may one day add himself to that exclusive list with his own style of indie-punk rap. He has been blamed in the past for sounding too much like what you would expect if you blended Billy Bragg, Mike Skinner and the Arctic Monkeys together. The poetic 23-year-old certainly doesn’t seem phased by his critics as he jokes and smiles as he takes to the stage of Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms. He cheekily announces to the crowd: “It’s been along time” and any Jamie T fan will tell you that it has! Since his debut offering Panic Prevention, he has been accused of hiding himself in the ‘difficult’ second album quagmire.
Attracts a packed-out room of followers
Tonight though, he’s stirred some excitement by attracting a packed crowd of left-over Summer term students and young professionals eagerly waiting for him to open his set. By the time he reaches his second song, he has everyone jumping around and singing along to his first album hit Operation.
He keeps the proceedings energetic until he pauses to ask if they can help him sing along to the chorus of Calm Down Dearest as he’s lost his voice from over indulging the night before. He seals the deal by offering to pole dance later if they help him out. As soon as the crowd hear the first few chords of the song they graciously accept! (I have yet to find out whether he kept his side of the bet.)
Catchy tracks and clever story telling is infectious
Throughout the hour-long set, he dipped in and out of new material and old favourites, treating the young rowdy crowd to debut album hits like Sheila, If You’ve Got The Money and Ike And Tina. For someone that most people say they won’t like out of principle, his catchy guitar-based tracks and clever story telling is very infectious and seems to capture the imagination of Nottingham’s youngsters tonight.
As I enjoy his penultimate song and inevitable future hit Sticks And Stones, I can’t help thinking that Jamie T is potentially another artist who has been poisoned by the quality of his debut LP. His new songs certainly aren’t as strong as his first album material but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth listening to. I’ll certainly be one of the first in line when his new album finally hits the shelves!
