The Courteeners: Live Review
2008-04-10 00:42:12
On arrival at Nottingham Trent University's Student Union, a gig venue that is more than accommodating for up and coming bands, gig-goers were greated with leaflets proclaiming The Courteeners to be “The New Manc Messiahs”. On the evidence of their performance tonight, the band definitely lived up to this billing – although they are more like a calm and sedate baby Jesus at the moment. Presumably, the miracles are yet to come. The Courteeners have enjoyed a great deal of success since the release of their first single, Cavorting, last summer. Lead singer Liam Fray told tonight's revellers that their debut album St Jude was: “number one in the album charts on Monday (its release date)” and while it remains to be seen whether all their supporters did indeed snap up the album on its first day, it is clear that the band have built up a sizeable support.
The crowd at Trent SU were raucous, riotous and rebellious – a good 25 crowd surfers during Cavorting saw to that – representing the fact that the band’s melodic and harmonious tunes are first and foremost there to be enjoyed. Yet the music, whilst on the whole being a joy to listen to, suffered slightly from 'first album syndrome', with the band taking a play-it-safe attitude towards their songs.
Acrylic, What Took You So Long and Not Nineteen Forever, among the singles released by the band so far, proved to be hugely popular. But the style of music on show were broad, feel-good songs with the attitude to boot, straight from the textbook of early-90s Madchester.
Where this band will be truly tested is in their second album, which will reveal the exact genre of music they wish to establish themselves in. For now, however, The Courteeners are a happy-go-lucky troupe, with an enjoyment factor that seeks to thrill and entertain. Roll on next Sunday’s album chart…..
