Mod Crop, The Musical: Theatre Review
2009-06-10 06:33:38
Mod Crop: The Musical, currently showing at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal, proclaims to be your return ticket to the sixties; however by the time the show had finished, I was more relieved that I had my return ticket home for the bus. Mod Crop is deeply disappointing in every respect. It does not capture the youth of the sixties; it only reveals the same problems that are present in every era. The trio of Mods are not represented as cool, scooter riding, urban heroes but stereotypical teenagers who want to party and pull girls. Although some audience members joined in with the songs by miming lyrics, the narrative was not compelling. It follows the Mod trio Andy, Don and Milt on their bank holiday journey to Skegness. Leaving their problems at home, Milt forgets his responsibilities and Andy craves a sexual encounter of the female kind which is encouraged by Don. After a whirlwind weekend they crash land home and face their responsibilities as it's time for the trio to end their wild mod days and look towards the future.
Sound problems ruined some songs
There were sound problems which ruined some songs. The live band were flawless in their delivery but naturally overpowered the actor's voices; this would not have caused a problem if their microphones were turned on. It was unprofessional and raised questions if sound checks were made before curtain call.
Mark Joseph who played Andy, did manage to play his character well and obviously is a talented musician. Milt, played by Marco Pezzolo, was fiery in his delivery which aided his character’s personality and Rob White, who starred as Don, added cheek and comedy. However, none of the characters had any depth and were portrayed unrealistically. The ensemble gave mixed efforts, one actress whose character fulfilled Andy's sexual adventure was energetic but slightly over exaggerated. She did manage to engage the audience though and should be in a more leading role.
Highlight of the show was the finale
The highlight of the show was the finale. The cast managed to create excitement and enjoyment for the audience with their singing and dancing. Some members of the cast encircled the audience and spoke to them directly. This was very entertaining but seemed separate from the actual show.
Mod Crop appears to be the baby brother of Quadrophenia, trying to be just as good but unfortunately it does not even come close. It is suitable for all ages but sadly it fails to hit the right notes. Fans of the era may be disappointed as it does not capture the energy of swinging sixties, only the trials and tribulations of teenagers.

This review is in complete contrast with all other reviews I have read on the new musical MOD CROP. As an actor myself I know it would be highly unlikely for any production to not do a sound check before hand, that’s just a ridiculous comment. Having been written by a man that was and is still surrounded by all things mod, I find it difficult to understand how this could not take you back to the 60s. And as for it playing on being a teenager too much, correct me if I’m wrong but I thought this play was about teenagers! GO AND SEE FOR YOURSELF…A MUST!

Oh dear, if this is the best you can do Fiona you should save your bus ticket altogether. Yes there were some problems with the sound which was irritating but this show has AUTHENTIC written all over it. Where were you in the sixties? See me after class - 1/10 - try harder.

I thoroughly enjoyed the new musical MOD CROP and would recommend anyone to go and see it! Fantastically written and directed and the young cast performed with enthusisam and passion! I thought the three main boys (Rob White, Marco Pezzolo and Mark Joseph) were excellent and Sharon played by Lucy Colgan sang Going out of my head and the 60's classic Crying Game beautifully. It was lovely to see and hear Dave Berry once again! Go and see it - its on till Saturday!

I went on Wednesday night with my wife and Mother in Law(Tell me about it!) and thought the show was really excellent. The sound was spot on although we were on row E and so I would agree that the band seemed loud there. If we had been further back, I'm sure this would not have been the case. The cast showed great enthusiasm and I was around in the 60's myself and could identify with the whole play. It was so brilliant that we're going again on Saturday!

Fiona, oh dear - maybe you should consider getting another job because you clearly are not very good at reviewing what was an absolutely fantastic show. Your comments about Mod Crop trying to be the baby brother of Quadrophenia, show just how little you know, Mod Crop is the Daddy of Quadrophenia as it was adapted from the original story of Mod Crop. This show was a very good reflection of 1960`s Britain and the acting, music and production were very good. You have failed to hit any notes and you only have to look at the responses to see that your judgement is off the mark.

Shorten the show (it is nearly 3 hours), so many scene changes must be hard to tech, and on Sat night that I guess is why the sound still kept getting lost. The friendly audiance loved it, though. Couldn't understand why one character was randomly passed a guitar on stage , for odd numbers, didn't seeem to fit his character. Potententialy as popular as Slice of Sat night etc. but needs to be sliced ( or should I say cropped).. Gr8 perforances by the leading boys, I guess they were pros. Best Of Luck

I agree, the show ran on far too long and should have been cut shorter leaving you wanting more. Although the local audience appreciated the home grown talent i think it would flop if it went any further afield unless it's redirected. The scene changes were ardous and meant there was no consistency to the show making it stilted and hard to follow, the songs should have been cut shorter leaving you wanting more not screaming for the bar and a drink. yes they are great songs but do a remix or something dont perform every song AGAIN in full length at the end of the show!!!Even Les Mis isn't as long as this show. The sound was still a problem when I saw the show on saturday and I dont know if that is because the show was too technical for the sound crew or what but the music was too loud sometimes and during some acting scenes mikes werent even turned on, which is not the actors fault by any means but unfortunately reflects on the show as a whole. On the whole I could see the audience enjoying the show and I can see why but on the whole the show could not be considered a professional production and I am afraid that if it was taken out of Nottingham and away from the friendly audience it would fall on it's face. It has the potential to be great but get a new director and choreographer and sound crew, crop the show a bit and it will be revitalised.

the show was apparently too long, and has been quoted as being "longer than les mis". The first half was infact an hour and four minutes every single night, and the second half ranging from one hour 12 minutes to one hour 23 minutes. so not even two and a half hours, let alone three hours. Im sure all members of the cast appreciate these reviews, it shows all aspects of what could be improved and what was good. Mod Crop being Quadrophenias baby? you're having a laugh, both are written by Alan Fletcher and i think he would know if it was nowhere near the standard. you also have to think that Quadrophenia is a film, retaking everything to make it perfect and there wouldn't exactly be any sound problems there would there! Thankyou to everyone saying good things, but do not bad mouth the director, Martin Berry is a work of art in human form.

This is fun! Thanks for the comments everyone. Negative comments allow us to improve what we do and positive are lovely to read. Rob's point about the timing is spot on. I agree as it happens that the show needs to be a little shorter in act 2 and we are addressing that for the next run of the show. I also agree that in some places the sound was difficult to balance, but I was determined that this show would be about rock and roll and not musical theatre. Thank you to all of you who came to see us. We have all had a ball and the feedback has been very positive. One plea, backing up what Rob says - if you are going to make comments - get your facts right first. See you all on tour or in London! Martin

Your right , I should have got my facts straight. I was including the interval. 7:30 start to 10:25 finish. This may sound flippant, you decide, but us rock n rollers tend to have a drink b4 the show and that is not a G&T . It is the only time I have had to queue for the gents at the interval at any theatre.!!! Us old rock n rollers bladders aren\'t what they should be. I guess there is a lot to factor in including the incontenance of us oldies :-)) So maybe look at shortening the 1st act. I can confirm many mic cues were late though cos I noticed it and it irritated and although go to the theatre lots I am not an expert just a punter. I to give credit to the sound guys they had a lot of changes which seemed to stop the flow and probably made it difficult, to re-cue? But that is just my humble opinion.. e.g. My girlfriend actually thought the guitar on stage was miming cos you couln\'t hear it properly at first. One thing I did notice is that it was done in a Non fake Notts accent, briliant, will you change the place names will it tours to match the local accents? don\'t we all just Love Dick Van Dyke\'s Cocker ney :-))) Sincere best wishes with the tour.

Not flippant at all - fair point well made. I think this internet immediacy is fantastic. It is great to have comments of all kinds, and as a director it is very useful indeed. Thank you again for coming along - and if you come again and the changes you have suggested have been made - you will know that you played a part in improving the production. Thanks again. Martin

Well after reading all of your comments, i would just like to mention that reviews are personal opinions. From reviewing theatre shows i have seen much better performances and gripping storylines that really do make theatre wonderful.
For the actor, who commented on my sound check, if you reread my review you will see that i have made a joke and suggested that they may not have done one, basically emphasisng the sound level clashes.
Regarding the teenagers, yes of course it was about teenagers but about the trials that all teenagers go through.
Plus, there was positive comments within my review. At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion but saying i need a new job is a bit pathethic.
You can\'t please everyone and in reference to other reviews...well it\'s like marmite love it or hate it!

Plus the bit about Baby brother i meant that it is never really remembered unlike Quadrophenia i was not talking about what came first! Just using simlies/metaphors of sibling rivalries!!!

As a member of the cast i would just like to say that we do not need a new director. Martin Berry is a great man to work with and had us working really hard so we would give our best on every performance night. We couldn't have asked for a better technical team (: all feedback is great asit gives us a chance to reflect and see what can be changed, so im not going to be biased and disagree with everyone's comments just because i was in the show. To be fair, the show wasn't as long as some people are stating, "nearly as long as les mis"...i don't think so. And in the finale, the songs were cut, believe me, i think we would have been dead by the time it finished if they hadn't been cut down. Thankyou to everyone who was in it, thankyou to Marting Berry and Steve Wallis for putting on such an amazing show and for giving us this opportunity, and to Sir Bob ;) see you all saturday. Bring on the tour (: x

In all fairness i think all you people who are commenting on Miss Fiona Stanleys reveiw are talking complete rubbish!! Having watched this show myself i believe that the actors resembled a group of GCSE drama students...bad at that!! The story line wasnt gripping enough to keep my attention all the way through, leading me to walk out after just 1hour! Quadrophenia DEFINATLEY stimulus the audience minds and keeps you gripped into the story line with MUCH better acting talent! I completely agree with Fiona and think you are all out of order saying she should get a new job, at the end the all this her review will be support and critised by all however i believe that you judge her by her review. If you feel that she should get new job...........maybe YOU should!!!!!!

That is the worst review I have ever heard and would like to comment on it. I was deeply and utterly shocked and would like to say something.I was completly disappointed and would like to tell you about it. I am really really unhappy and depressed about it and would like to respond but I haven\'t seen it, what\'s it like?

I went to see this show and was blown away by all who took part. It made me laugh, cry, sing and dance all in one performance. I also thought Mark Joseph was outstanding as Andy. So I thought your comments were a little harsh and unfair to these people, whom I thought had made a great effort to entertain us. And I certainly was. Thankyou to all who took part in it.
I LOVED
